“Kind Words” teaches students that their words make a difference
November 13th is World Kindness Day! While there are many ways to show kindness to others (on this day and every day!), who doesn’t love hearing kind words from their friends, loved ones, or even a stranger?
As adults, compliments and kind words are great to hear. For students, kind words from a classmate can make their day and lead them to feeling more comfortable in their school environment.
Kind words are important, but how can we teach students the immense impact of both kind and unkind words? More importantly, how can we teach them the impact of choosing to use kind or unkind words?
Today, we’ll explore several QuaverSEL activities that will help students understand and share kind words.
Kind and Unkind Words
To find this engaging activity, head over to Lessons on your Teacher Dashboard. You’ll find this activity in Lesson 27 of the Kindergarten Curriculum.
As you begin this activity, remind your students: “Kind words feel so good to hear and say and they show you are a good friend!”
Let’s dive in!
Choose either the “kind” or “unkind” emojis by clicking on them individually. For each emoji, a sentence with blank words will be revealed.
Ask students for input as you drag and drop words from the word bank to the appropriate spaces. This can be done as a class or in groups.
Once your students have filled in the blanks, click CHECK to check for accuracy, REVEAL to see the entire definition, CLEAR to remove responses, or BACK to go back to the previous screen.
Once you’ve discussed kind and unkind words, head back to the main screen and click DISCUSS.
Using this screen, discuss what to do when someone is unkind. Click each tile to reveal strategies for students to use at each level of unkind words. Press the yellow PLAY button multiple times for audio of each strategy. This is also a great opportunity to encourage problem-solving skills. What solutions can students come up with when someone is being unkind to them?
You may also choose to continue the discussion with the following questions:
- What comes to mind when someone says unkind words to you? What comes to mind when someone says kind words to you?
- What is the most important thing to do if someone says something really unkind to you? What is the most important thing to do if someone keeps saying unkind things to you even if you’ve asked them to please stop?
If there is time left in class, you might consider ending with the SELMusic song, “Kind Words.” Found in your SELMusic Library and in Lesson 27 of the Kindergarten Curriculum, this song reinforces the power of speaking kind words to our peers.
